Time to Practice

Your body is not a project. Instead of focusing on all the things you can fix, try to find appreciation for all the miraculous things it does for you every day. By tracking how much our arms do for us, we might conclude that it’s pretty ridiculous to criticize them for not looking a certain way. Part of feeling better about your body involves shifting your perspective. When you find appreciation for all that your body does, you’re working to escape impossibly narrow beauty standards set by corporations looking to profit off your shame (and people self-consciously adhering to those external demands).

Instead of focusing on your body’s appearance, try focusing on its functionality. It could be something as simple as homing in on your breath. In a culture motivated by appearance, this might feel impossible. But by focusing on the meaningful things our bodies allow us to do every day, we can begin to find a greater appreciation for them. There are billions of cells in your body working hard every day so you can digest food, heal a wound, or show affection to a loved one.

Written exercise: List three body parts that are particularly triggering for you. For each body part, express gratitude for one to three functional things it does for you every day. This exercise applies to all bodies, no matter their current condition or ability.
